A volcano erupted at Sakurajima in Kagoshima Prefecture in southwest Japan early today, according to the Japan Meteorological Agency, sending columns of ash and smoke up to 4,400 metres into the atmosphere.
The agency said the eruption continued after the initial event and forecast ash fall across parts of the prefecture.
