We can live twice; once in reality and once through recalling our memories. As soon as I open an old diary notebook with worn out papers telling stories like a strong perfume that smothers me with emotions I feel this meaning. It intrigues me how a smell can change my mood and takes me back to places and situations that no more existed. Sometimes, I find myself smiling for just tasting a childhood delicacy or a hearty meal that once filled me with joy. It is amazingly surprising how a smell can carry us back in time to days of utter happiness. An aroma, a smell of food or a special taste can have a negative or positive impact on us. Memories are our back -in -time machine.
Can we imagine a world void of memories? Would we ever be happier? Would we have peace of mind? Sometimes we just want to erase the bad things that we experienced in life. A mind without past memories can be a good choice for some people and a curse for others. It could save some bitterness and tears and on the other hand it would deprive others of the only good things that happened to them. Our past controls our present and out future as well but could eliminating it be of any help? Commit a mistake and just delete it from history, from your memory and from your records. That sounds a pleasant suggestion. However, we learn from our mistakes whether we like it or not.
Good or bad memories are the fuel of our lives. As there was things we wish they never happened to us there is other incidents that we would delightfully remember forever. If we forget that approaching fire hurts we will burn ourselves many times. Falling in a pit can be disastrous if we kept on repeating the same mistake and not avoiding the dangerous route. Memories build up experience. They fill us with the necessary tools to resume life. We fill up our lungs and take a deep breath before diving into the sea of life to look for the essence of our existence.
Either we sigh with a big smile of content of curl our lips in agony with a feeling of bitterness we learn. A lucky person carries a luggage of memories that mean that he had a busy life full of action and people. Memories and past experiences are a necessary shade in a long journey under the sun. One cannot acquire wisdom without extracting lessons from the past on a firm present ground with a steady eye on the future.
