In its latest meeting, September 23, 2024, World Poetry Movement (WPM) called to worldwide poetry action to be held around the world. The WPM Coordinating Committee discussed several points and approved its declaration, as following:
“Children in Gaza improvise goalposts in the streets and run after a leather ball, while girls dance in rounds. Everyone studies in classrooms in rubble and sleeps among the ruins. They take care of their wounded while petting their rabbits, cats and parrots. Until more bombs go off and there are new dead. Almost 17,000 children have been massacred, more than 6,000 children injured and 21,000 disappeared. One million children have been displaced. In a series of perverse acts, Netanyahu’s genocidal government wants to kill the future of the world.
56 active wars are destroying peoples and cultures. The United Nations does not have the capacity to deactivate them. Fascism seeks all power over the world. Nazis and allies share the spoils and command. Almost 600 million humans suffer from hunger on the planet and 1,800,000 million are homeless. Nuclear war is on the doorstep every day. The apocalypse blows his rusty bugle.
The World Poetry Movement calls on poets, artists, thinkers and the inhabitants of the planet to stand up in solidarity with the people of Gaza, for the immediate end of the war of genocide and cultural extermination, the withdrawal of the Israeli occupation forces, the end of the siege, and the convening of a world conference to rebuild it.
We also express our solidarity with the peoples and nature attacked by predatory capitalism. We are an indivisible part of humanity and we owe ourselves to it. Let us multiply our voice in October in every country on Earth, reading poetry to share with the peoples the sister language of rebirth. Our dream will make the desert bloom and will be a retaining wall against death.”
