The very English custom of taking afternoon tea is thought to have found its roots in the 19th century by Lady Anna, the seventh Duchess of Bedford. Lunch in those days was rather early and dinner was not served until late in the evening. Every afternoon, the Duchess found that she was famished and began to request a pot of tea, served with some light refreshments. The Duchess began inviting her friends to join her and very soon, enjoying tea in the middle of the afternoon became fashionable.
Afternoon Tea has been a tradition that has graced British afternoons since the 1840s, and has since evolved into what is often a highbrow social occasion.
