My journey to Porto, Portugal, began early on the morning of January 8th, 2025. Alongside my travel companion, Imran Jamali, we embarked on an exciting trip from Stockholm, Sweden, to the heart of Portugal. Arriving in Porto, we were greeted by the cool, crisp air and the promise of exploring a city rich in history, culture, and unique experiences.

After checking into our guest house, Boavista, we were eager to get started, despite the persistent drizzle that welcomed us. Armed with city maps and a few helpful tips from locals, we set out on foot to explore Porto. The rain didn’t deter us—it only added a layer of charm to the cobbled streets and historic buildings. We wandered through the city, discovering quaint shops and picturesque squares. At times, we hopped into taxis to cover longer distances or simply to escape the rain.

Our first culinary adventure took us to Turmeric Restaurant, where we indulged in a comforting, flavorful meal of Pakistani food. It was a warm and satisfying experience, offering a taste of home amidst the new and unfamiliar surroundings. The rain continued to fall, but we found solace in the food and the ambiance of the restaurant.
After a day of exploration, we found another local restaurant near our guest house for a cozy dinner. We also picked up ingredients for breakfast the next day, enjoying the simplicity of enjoying a meal in the comfort of our accommodations.

Day 2: A Journey to Braga and Guimaraes
The following day was an exciting one, as we ventured outside Porto for a day trip to Braga and Guimaraes with the Living Tours group. As we gathered with fellow travelers—mostly Indian Americans, with a few from other parts of Europe—we felt a sense of connection to the global community. It was an enriching experience, as we explored the historic sites of both cities, learning about their culture and heritage. Braga, with its stunning churches and serene ambiance, was a highlight, and Guimaraes, the birthplace of Portugal, left us in awe of its medieval charm. We were surrounded by new friends, each bringing their own stories to the journey. The laughter and shared experiences were the perfect recipe for a memorable day.

Porto: A City of Beauty and Bridges
Porto quickly captured our hearts. The city’s stunning architecture, colorful buildings, and narrow streets filled with life left a lasting impression. We couldn’t miss the famous Six Bridges Boat Trip on the Douro River—a must-do experience in Porto. As we sailed under the majestic bridges, the cool breeze and the beauty of the surroundings took our breath away. From the boat, we saw the famed winery boats that have long been a symbol of Porto’s rich wine-making history.
We also walked across several of the iconic bridges that connect Porto to its neighboring areas, each offering unique views of the river and the city. Porto truly felt like a place where old and new beautifully coexisted.
For dinner, we ventured into another Indian restaurant, which became a delightful continuation of our culinary journey. After so many delicious meals, it was clear that Porto had an incredible food scene.

Meeting Ana: A Friend in Porto
One of the highlights of our trip was meeting our Portuguese friend Ana, who kindly joined us at a nearby cafeteria. It was a heartwarming encounter—talking over coffee and enjoying the easy conversation that flows so naturally between friends. Our time with Ana felt like a bridge between cultures, and it made our experience in Porto feel even more personal and meaningful.

On our last day in Porto, we took the opportunity to revisit some of our favorite spots. We walked endlessly, soaking in the beauty of the city for one final time. Porto had left its mark on us—the architecture, the food, the people. We also bought a few souvenirs to remember our journey by, each item serving as a small token of our wonderful trip.

Reflections on Porto
Porto, with its historical charm and vibrant energy, is a city that beckons travelers to slow down and explore at their own pace. From the rainy streets to the warm, inviting cafes, every moment was filled with discovery. Braga and Guimaraes were beautiful day trips, but Porto’s laid-back atmosphere and rich heritage made it the true highlight of our journey.
As we left the city, we knew that Porto had gifted us more than just memories—it had given us new perspectives, new friendships, and a deeper appreciation for the beauty of travel.
