The Ramadan marathon is characterized by the abundance of works between drama, comedy, romance, action, history, and biographies. Due to the large number of works, sometimes not every work gets the appreciation or criticism it deserves because of the so-called popular series that attract audiences by presenting endless social problems. These problems are well-understood and exploited by YouTube channel content creators, who offer private family issues that nevertheless gather thousands of viewers. The poor young man who ends up as one of the richest people, for example, plays with the pain of the youth and attracts them to him; such works distract them from watching the truly powerful works that provide value to the viewer, but whose star has faded among popular works.
The star Khaled El Nabawy appears in the television series "The Imam's Message," which chronicles the life journey full of challenges and struggle of one of the most important religious figures in Islamic history, Imam "Muhammad bin Idris Al-Shafi'i," the founder of the third school of Islamic jurisprudence among the Sunni and community, known as the Shafi'i school. Each Islamic country had its favorite jurist and imam, such as Imam Abu Hanifa, the jurist of Iraq, and Imam Malik bin Anas, the jurist of the Hijaz. Al-Shafi'i became the jurist of Egypt; after growing up in a righteous upbringing preserving his noble lineage from Abd Manaf bin Qusay, the third grandfather of the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH), and continuing by memorizing the Quran, he showed signs of intelligence, good perception, listening, and memorization. His mother – who was said in more than one narration to be the granddaughter of Al-Hussein bin Ali bin Abi Talib but the agreed-upon narration is that she was an Azdi woman from Yemen – took care to teach him knowledge from the hands of the great scholars of his time. He went to Medina to seek knowledge from its imam, Malik bin Anas, who loved him and gave him glad tidings of a great future. In his first journey to Baghdad, he took the knowledge of Imam Abu Hanifa and combined the jurisprudence of the Hijaz and Iraq. He traveled from country to country seeking knowledge and inquiring about the heritage of each esteemed scholar and documenting it, saying, "Seeking knowledge is better than performing supererogatory prayers." He then completed his travels in Egypt, where he found peace of heart and made it his last stop, staying for four years, during which he produced his knowledge and thinking in a new jurisprudential school that combined the two previous schools: the school of Imam Abu Hanifa, which emphasized the transmission of the Prophet's (PBUH) and companions' teachings, and the school of Imam Malik, which focused on his opinions on controversial issues not mentioned in Quranic or authentic Sunnah texts, in addition to his new vision and opinions, thus presenting the Shafi'i jurisprudence to the people until he passed away on the land of Egypt and was buried in what is now known as the Dome or Shrine of Imam Al-Shafi'i.
The jurisprudence of Imam Al-Shafi'i remained the followed and referenced guide for the people for many years, following the Prophet's (PBUH) saying, "O Allah, guide Quraysh, for their scholar fills the layers of the earth with knowledge. O Allah, as You have made them taste punishment, let them taste favor." He supplicated this three times, and it was said that the response was in Imam Al-Shafi'i, as no jurist-scholar more beloved than Imam Al-Shafi'i had emerged from the lineage of Quraysh.
The Fatimid state was established, adopting the Isma'ili Shi'a doctrine as its official school of thought and constructing Al-Azhar Mosque as a center for disseminating the Shi'a doctrine in Egypt. Then, Saladin Al-Ayyubi ended the Fatimid rule and established the Ayyubid state, reinstating the Shafi'i school as the official doctrine in the country. This continued for many years until Selim I came as an occupier, making the prevailing school of thought in Egypt the Hanafi school, which was followed in the Ottoman Empire, and it remains the predominant school to this day.
There is no reason for anger or protest, as there is no conflict between the foundations and rules of the four schools of thought – the fourth being the school of Imam Ahmad ibn Hanbal. The source and reference for all Muslims are the Holy Quran and the Prophetic Sunnah, and the efforts of Imams and scholars in matters not explicitly mentioned in the texts are permissible as long as there is evidence and proof with a preponderant opinion. After discussions, the followers of the four schools come together in one mosque to perform the obligatory prayers.
If art exists for a divine purpose, it is to present great figures who devoted their lives to seeking knowledge with pure intentions for the sake of Allah, not desiring fame or prestige, but rather seeking the satisfaction of the Most Merciful. For this reason, art exists for the likes of star Khaled El Nabawy; a balanced actor who never chased after popular works. Despite the success of his masterpiece and that of the great writer Osama Anwar Okasha, "We're Coming Back, O Love," last year, he could have continued presenting similar characters or repeating the same character by creating new parts for the series, as his peers and those around him do to gain more admiration and success. However, he chose the complete opposite, presenting a work he knew would not be popular but aligned with his convictions. This is Imam Al-Shafi'i, this is Khaled El Nabawy, and this is "The Imam's Message."
