One of the advantages of the film departments established in some universities is that they have provided the opportunity to discover fresh talent with innovative ideas, which may contribute to the change we desire in the form and content of our films. While participating in the evaluation of graduation projects of cinema department students at the School of Media - British University, I was surprised by a large number of talented individuals not only in film directing but in all areas of film production, such as photography, decoration, editing, and production, under the supervision of the great director, Hany Lachine.
In the cinema department, there are promising young people writing scripts and living experiences from scratch, under the patronage and support of the dean of the faculty, the great artist Dr. Mohamed Shoman, who followed the judging sessions as if each film project was part of him. The films were judged by creators including the author Abdel Rahim Kamal, critic Tarek El Shennawy, media personality Osama El Sheikh, director Nadine Khan, Dr. Yousry Abdullah, critic Ahmed El Naggar, Dr. Sherif Saleh, and Dr. Reem Lotfi Saad. They lived with different experiences of fifteen short fictional films, their creators tackled important ideas, and while levels varied, it confirmed that we are facing a generation with abilities and ideas to create a different kind of cinema.
The fifteen films are "Door in a Door", "Mistake", "Remontada", "Trend", "Bringing Back the Loved One", "I Am the King", "Billy and the Illusion", "Without Permission", "All Ten Minutes", "Property", "After the Number", "Go Away, Satan", "Poison in Honey". These films were discussed by specialists in the first half of the year as scripts, then implemented in different ways, each student performed an important role, some took on two or three tasks, such as photographer, set designer, director, and editor.
What is amazing is that most of these experiences are by female students, in fact, you might find an entire film made by females, presenting ideas of utmost importance. Some films surprise you with the audacity of their ideas, like the film "Trend" which deals with the phenomenon of social media engulfing our lives, known as "trending", and as you watch the films, you discover talented actors and actresses, as happened in the film "Poison in Honey", where an actress played a patient moving in a wheelchair, among other actresses.
In all arts faculties, especially those with film departments, we need a collaboration from governmental bodies, like the National Center for Cinema, and the Ministry of Social Solidarity, as it produces short films. However, everything it produces might be for one person with one idea, while if we followed experiences like the ones we have seen, we would discover messages that concern women, and the family in general. A conversation between me and the college deputy Dr. Adel Saleh took place, about the importance of allowing these students to experiment, because without experimentation they would present rigid templates, or they would imitate the experiences of others. In reality, what has been presented from cinematic experiences, despite the weakness of some, there is what confirms that we need to be optimistic about them. We need to believe in their abilities, like Dr. Youssef Hisham, Dr. Mohamed Timour, Dr. Amir Khalf, and an important team including assistant Marina Dargham... We need to dream with these and others to create a talented generation.
