Perhaps the most important question you should ask yourself before climbing a mountain is, "how will you settle on its peak upon arrival?"
The movie "BlackBerry 2023" explains to you how to reach the peak quickly and also how to fall from it in a moment. The mistake might not be in reaching, but in realizing that you're not alone at the top. You must fight to maintain your place because the mountain peak cannot accommodate many.
The film begins with a state of disarray among its protagonists, the founders of "BlackBerry", Matt Johnson as Douglas Fregin, and Jay Baruchel as Mike Lazaridis, the "designer of the first BlackBerry phone". Each is facing failure in his professional life due to debts, loss of direction, and lack of experience, until they meet Glenn Howerton, who plays Jim Balsillie. After being fired from his company due to unprofessional conduct, he puts them on the path to glory.
The scene changes as Balsillie turns to Mike and Doug to achieve revenge after his expulsion from work by seeking swift success that will take him to the top, covering his failure in his previous job from which he was expelled.
The story's heroes turned to each other with different intentions, establishing a company that quickly captured 45% of the global mobile market in just a few years. This may not have been achievable without Mike and Doug turning to Balsillie, who had a sharp mind for management, marketing, and negotiation, and also Balsillie turning to them after losing his job.
The scene shifts from Balsillie's office at his previous job in a prestigious company to his small office where "Mike and Doug" and their friends work. The office is cluttered and disordered, devoid of even the simplest means of communication he had in his previous office. Angered, Balsillie swiftly starts giving orders to reorganize the office and to work quickly on the new invention - the first mobile phone that sends emails.
The phone was unveiled after "Mike and Doug" worked all night to finish the design in just one evening. They were scheduled to move to New York to market it in the morning. The scene shows us how Balsillie's entry into their lives had a quick impact after they had been moving whimsically, he starts giving orders and showing them how to operate in the professional world.
The design quickly impresses everyone, and then the development stages begin with different generations and names for the phone models that caused a great stir in the world of technology and communication. However, some problems arose with the Securities and Exchange Commission resulting from the rapid rise of the company. The company receives its first strong blow, followed by another after the launch of the first full-screen phone without a keyboard to the market.
The film reveals what happened in the corridors of "BlackBerry" when Steve Jobs announced the new phone, "iPhone", which caused a seismic shift in the mobile phone world, a market where "BlackBerry" had almost half of its shares. Thus, the company received the knockout blow, especially after Mike, the founder and CEO of BlackBerry, refused to acknowledge the new phone, which he described as "stupid". However, Mike did not realize that standing still while others surpass you with new ideas is indeed stupidity. Hence begins the resounding fall of "BlackBerry" in the mobile phone market in front of the newcomer, "iPhone".
The film narrates what happened to Doug, co-founder of BlackBerry, who appeared in the film as the mind and conscience for his friend, who often ignored him, especially after Mike reached the top of the mountain to see that he didn't need the advice of his old friend. It was then remembered that in 2007, "Doug" sold his shares at a high price, and the author described what he did as "a secret of one of the richest men in the world."
Today, BlackBerry's market share of mobile phones is 0% after it reached 45% at the height of its glory in mobile phone distribution; thus writing the end of the "BlackBerry" story.
