School children can now access free health screenings without waiting for the last week of the summer holidays. Medeor 24x7 Hospital, a unit of VPS Healthcare, has announced its Back to School screening programme from 7th August 2017 in order to avoid the seasonal rush.
“Last year, we reached almost 2000 kids in the capital,” said Dr. Lalu Chacko, Chief Medical Offer at Medeor 24x7 Hospital, Abu Dhabi. “Starting early this year will not only make it easier to get appointments but also reap the same benefits across all our facilities in Abu Dhabi, Al Ain, Dubai, Yas and Al Zeina.”
Kids between 4 and 15 years of age can benefit from a free medical screening during this time. Services include screening for overall development, teeth, eyes, hearing, speech, body aches, etc. There will be a special emphasis on juvenile arthritis, obesity and autism with a focus on early prevention of long-term health risks.
According to Dr. Ziaul Akhter, Specialist Pediatrics with over 29 years of experience are prone to sickness once they resume school after long holidays. This is due to the infections that they can get easily.
“Simple hand hygiene habits, coughing or sneezing etiquette and healthy diet can go a long way to maintain a high healthy status and these habits need not be limited to schools being open or not.”
Dr. Ziaul also added that expat children ought to get vaccinated as per the UAE vaccination schedule and also against diseases that are prevalent in their countries of origin. Otherwise when they visit their native country during their vacation, they are more prone to get serious illnesses such as Hepatitis A, Typhoid, Meningococcal Meningitis and Influenza.
However, long, lazy holidays affect both children and adults alike. “We often overlook the teachers’ contribution towards society and students. Medeor is excited to include a special health screening for them in the Back to School campaign this year as a way of giving back to their efforts,” said Dr. Lalu Chacko.
The teacher’s screening will include Cardiology, Gynaecology screening with Pap Tests for women and also free consultations with the Bariatric Surgeon where applicable. For those who are not acclimatized to the UAE weather, this can be a useful to avoid a stressful sick leave later.
Overall wellbeing is a great way to start the new school term. Teachers and parents are invited to learn about the state of their and their children’s health respectively via free screenings and consultation. Families of the kids also stand a chance to receive wellness coupons at the hospital.
