Chinese scientists have developed a new type of electronic skin that enables robots to navigate through surrounding objects in the dark using the sense of touch when vision is limited.
The Chinese news agency "Xinhua" reported that a team of researchers from Southeast University in China developed this new electronic skin based on natural silk, a protein material. The electronic skin is soft, made of gel-like material, has a ribbon-like appearance resembling human skin, and contains all the physical and chemical properties similar to the desired skin, such as stretchability, self-healing ability, weak acidity, and anti-bacterial activities. It can also sense temperature, pressure, and humidity in the surrounding conditions as soon as it is activated.
The discovery results, published in the journal "ACS Nano", indicated that the skin can be easily patched by connecting a new piece to the damaged one.
