Tajikistan closes country’s largest cement plant for environmental reasons

Operating since 1942, the cement plant is outdated and has a negative impact on the city’s ecology

Dushanbe

The Open Joint-Stock Company “Sementi Tochik” has announced closure of the largest cement plant in Tajikistan.

“In accordance with the protocol No.6 of the government meeting of the Republic of Tajikistan dated June 29, 2023, the Open Joint-Stock Company ‘Sementi Tochik’ (OJSC ‘Sementi Tochik’), Dushanbe, which has been operating since 1942, has been closed due to the fact that the enterprise is outdated and has a negative impact on the city’s ecology,” an announcement said declaring the termination of its activities from December 26, 2023.

The government of Tajikistan decided to close the cement plant, considering it harmful to the environment. This issue has been discussed among specialists and activists for many years, demanding that the government either completely close the enterprise or relocate it to another location away from populated areas.

After several modern cement plants were built in Tajikistan in recent years, and the republic began to export cement, it became evident that the Dushanbe Cement Plant did not meet the requirements, directly affecting the ecology of the city and its residents.

Moreover, all production units and equipment of the enterprise are worn out and partially unusable, repairs are impossible, and the cement production process at the plant does not yield the desired results.

Since its establishment, the Dushanbe Cement Plant has been the only facility producing cement in Tajikistan. Although the production capacity of this plant was 1 million tons per year, it never produced products in such volume.
