The UAE Re-election to Chair the Study Group of the “IoT and Smart Cities” at the ITU

The Telecommunications Regulatory Authority (TRA) has revealed the outcomes of its participation in the World Telecommunication Standardization Assembly (WTSA), which was concluded recently in Yasmine Al Hammamat, Tunisia. During the WTSA meetings, the UAE has been re-elected to chair the Study Group 20 of the Internet of Things (IoT) and Smart Cities. The UAE has been also elected to vice chair the Study Group 2 on the Numbering Standard.

In the relevant details, the UAE representative in the ITU, Engineer Nasser Al Marzouqi, has been elected to chair the Study Group of IoT and Smart Cities. Moreover, Engineer Saif Bin Ghelaita, Director Technology Development Affairs in TRA, has been elected the vice-chairman of the Study Group of Numbering Standard.

Commenting on the outcome of this participation, H.E Hamad Obaid Al Mansoori, TRA Director General, said: ‘The UAE enjoys the confidence of the ITU member states, due to the tireless efforts of the UAE represented by TRA, in all the conferences and activities of the organization. We look forward to continue the work according to a comprehensive and systematic plan to develop and empower the relations with the ITU, through constant participation in providing suggestions and opinions that enrich the work of the organization, support its efforts and enhance its leading role of the global ICT sector.’

H.E Al Mansoori added: ‘We will continue the process of preparing and developing young national competencies to reach leading positions in ICT related international organizations. These efforts come in line with the objectives set by our wise leadership within the UAE vision 2021 to invest in the human element as a fundamental pillar in sustainable development.’

Arab Coordination:

The meetings of the WTSA-16 have witnessed distinguished interactive presence of the Arab group through offering 23 proposals; most of them have been adopted.

Among the most important proposals are the amendment of the e-health resolution, the special resolution for the accessibility of persons with disabilities to ICT services, in addition to adopting a new resolution on open-source community. A number of proposals have been provided by UAE and adopted through the Arab group as joint Arabic proposals.
