Ukraine's pavilion at COP28 reaffirms country's role in meeting its climate commitments

Ukraine is participating in the 28th Conference of the Parties (COP28) after its successful participation in COP27 in Egypt. At the forefront of Ukraine's representation are innovative green and wind energy projects.

Ukraine aims to underscore the nation's commitment to sustainable development and fulfilling its climate obligations.

Through its pavilion in the Blue Zone, Ukraine is showcasing a green energy project that was implemented in 2022, the Tyligulska wind project - the largest wind farm in Ukraine - operated by DTEK.

The first stage, with a capacity of 114 MW, was commissioned in the spring of 2023. The second stage of the windfarm will consist of 64 wind turbines (of 6 MW each) with a total capacity of 384 MW.

Combined, the first and second phases of DTEK Tyligulska windfarm will have a capacity of around 500 MW (83 wind turbines). The plant will be capable of generating about 1.7 TWh of electricity annually – enough for the needs of 900,000 households. It is expected the project will save 1.7 million tons of CO2 that would otherwise be emitted.

The pavilion also showcases Ukraine's plan, which encompasses 850 wide-ranging over the next decade, as well as its priority programmes, which include "restoring a clean environment," "energy independence," and the "green deal."

Ukraine's pavilion at COP28 was developed by the teams of the Ministry of Environmental Protection and Natural Resources of Ukraine with the support and assistance of the European Union, the German Federal Government, IKI, the German Society for International Cooperation (GIZ), the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in Ukraine, the UN Global Compact, the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (Recovery Programme and Ukraine Reform Architecture), and DTEK Group, the major private investor in Ukraine's energy sector.

The concept of the pavilion was developed by Gres Todorchuk in collaboration with FORMA architectural office and how.production, a Ukrainian production agency.
