Fujairah Municipality launches pioneering projects in support of sustainability journey

The programmes and projects that support sustainability at the Fujairah Municipality have become one of the most important features of the emirate to preserve the environment and ensure its continuity for future generations, as part of its ambitious strategy in this field, in conjunction with the United Arab Emirates hosting the Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change COP28.

In a statement to the Emirates News Agency (WAM), Eng. Mohammed Saif Al Afkham, Director-General of Fujairah Municipality, stressed the municipality's leading role in supporting the sustainable development in the emirate and striving to achieve the best practices and standards to ensure the continuity of environmental conservation and sustainability through projects and programmes that the municipality has been keen on, thanks to the directives of H.H. Sheikh Hamad bin Mohammed Al Sharqi, Supreme Council Member and Ruler of Fujairah, and under the follow-up of H.H. Sheikh Mohammed bin Hamad bin Mohammed Al Sharqi, Crown Prince of Fujairah, and their unlimited support in achieving the ambitious goals in the sustainability sector.

Al Afkham said that one of the most important of these projects is the solid waste sorting station, which is considered one of the leading projects that works to collect and sort waste into materials suitable for recycling, such as paper, metal, organic materials, and plastic, through advanced devices and equipment with a capacity of 200 tons annually.

He said that the fertiliser factory recycles organic waste into materials that benefit the soil, which improves agricultural activity and soil fertility. This factory comes from the municipality's keenness to support environmental projects and develop the waste treatment system and benefit from it.

Al Afkham also announced the launch of the Think Green smart application, which uses modern technologies to promote environmental sustainability and awareness in the emirate. The app allows community members to contribute to environmental conservation by sorting waste at the source. It has won several awards, including the Happiness in the Workplace Award in 2020 and the Emirates Ideas Award in the Environment category for green applications.

He highlighted the municipality's innovative solar-powered smart mosquito traps, which are made from environmentally friendly materials and help to control pests and disease-carrying insects. These traps have significantly reduced the spread of pests, and are operated by a specialised team.

Afkham noted the oil and grease treatment project, which partners with the private sector to reduce the emirate's carbon footprint by 13% by collecting used cooking oil from private sector facilities and converting it into environmentally friendly materials like soap, fertiliser, irrigation water, and biofuel.

The Director-General of Fujairah Municipality said that the municipality has reduced electricity consumption by installing high-quality, energy-efficient LED lights on public and internal streets. This helps to improve the road sector and meet the highest sustainability standards.

Afkham pointed to the municipality's many awareness programmes on sustainability, such as workshops on oil treatment, innovative projects, and brainstorming sessions. The municipality also participates in exhibitions and conferences to promote its sustainability initiatives.
